'Catch turtle, slit neck and drink blood to rehydrate. Be careful that beak does not puncture liferaft.' It's the sort of tip you are unlikely to ever need - but that could, in extremis, save your life.

Most of the information in this guide is more practical and includes advice on preparing for and coping with heavy weather, man overboard prevention and recovery, liferafts, fire, alarms and abandoning ship. First aid, survival in cold water and signals are also included.

The RYA currently produces the best laid-out and illustrated instructional books of any of the nautical publishers, and this manual is no exception. Recommended.
